About
Project Ascension was my exploration of a simplified take on The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Nintendo, 2013).
I had found that this particular Zelda title made use of multiple items that were very close to each other in function, i.e. you aim and shoot them (bow & arrow, boomerang, grapple hook, magic rods).
The gameplay premise of Project Ascension was inspired by this observation and based on having a single all-in-one aim-and-shoot ability with puzzles focused around this one mechanic.
~
The main build is a collection of various level designs that explored the possibility space of this mechanic and illustrates the kind of exploration I was doing with the game.
The build labelled Zelda is a recreation of the first dungeon from A Link Between Worlds and was my starting point for the project.
The build labelled GGJ2015 was my 48 hour recreation of the gameplay mechanics using original assets and contained a simple level.
~
The shifting architecture aestetic was inspired by Monument Valley (ustwo games, 2014).
A later iteration replaced the freeform movement as seen in Zelda with a grid-based movement system inspired primarily by the game Lara Croft GO (Square-Enix Montreal, 2015).
